The New Luxury – What’s That?

April 4, 2017

What defines luxury? Well, it isn’t always about how much money we spend, it goes much deeper than that.

What defines luxury? That’s an interesting question, and one that I have chatted about lately with designer friends. My conclusion: luxury isn’t always about how much money we spend, it goes much deeper than that.

For me, luxury is…  having a refuge where you can bond with your family and friends, feel comfortable and comforted. Feeling safe, especially in today’s world, and particularly at home where you can shut out the world and all of its “noise.”

Luxury is...having “just enough.” Choosing the right-sized home for your lifestyle and needs and feeling satisfied with what you have. Think quality over quantity.

Luxury is...having time to relax and spend with your friends and family - including those furry family members! Time to lead a healthy and longer life, to create an organized and functional home and to balance home and work.

Luxury is...being happy in your home. We always encourage clients to design their homes for themselves, not the next owner or the “trend setters,” whoever they are! Our happiest clients are those who surround themselves with items that have meaning and evoke memories, whose homes are touchable and welcoming to family and friends and who have some personal space within their house.

Luxury is...a transformative experience. Remember your first real kiss, or your first time behind the wheel and that sense of independence? How about your first child or first home? Life wasn’t the same again.

Luxury is...beauty. It feeds your soul, inspires you and captivates your mind, such as this stunning painting, above, by Chicago artist Lynn Basa. Beauty is the balance of form and function, of mixing something old with something new, of encountering something unexpected in your home, your life or relationships.

Luxury is...you and me! As designers we define luxury as the joy of sharing the design process. Nothing makes us happier than helping our clients fall in love with their homes again, taking their dreams and making them better. Our passion is to create an unforgettable client-designer relationship and surprising our clients with ideas they didn’t know were possible. Of course, we all have our personal definitions too. What does luxury mean to you?
