Riveted on Rivets

January 6, 2016

Here’s a safe prediction for 2016 - The industrial chic revolution will continue to be popular for residential and commercial interiors.

Here’s a safe prediction for 2016 - The industrial chic revolution will continue to be popular for residential and commercial interiors. This rough-luxe look took hold originally in urban settings, particularly in restaurant design, but the riveted look is popping out everywhere in home furnishings, from lamps and mirrors to tables, chests, wallpaper and steak knife sets that would be right at home in the Chicago area’s finest steak houses.

As with all trends, I like to use a light touch. I would pair an industrial element with softer, transitional pieces to provide some contrast and tension in a room. After all, too many rivets would be too riveting!

Restoration Hardware loves this look and so do many other vendors. We just installed a hammered and riveted bathroom vanity, below, from Restoration Hardware in a master bedroom.

Who knew bumpy wallpaper could be this handsome? I love the gold rivets on the dark grey background from Phillip Jeffries.

The interesting patterns of rivets caught my eye in these sheet metal mirrors straight from Alexander and Pearl in the United Kingdom. They add a raw element to a room and would work particularly well in a man’s retreat.

For a more subtle approach I like this powder room vanity. The combination of clean lines with machine age details and a modernistic faucet is very appealing. The driftwood gray finish is a rugged complement to the sleek black counter and backsplash.

For a den or family room I like this hand-hammered copper and verdigris drum table from Grandin Road. It is understated enough that it pairs well with a riveted leather arm chair.

We see the rough-luxe look here again in an Arteriors table lamp with riveted metal lamp base and a crisply tailored lampshade. You could say it’s just enough industrial edginess to make a room, well, riveting!
