Love Color? Here Are Tips For Creating Harmony

February 6, 2014

Some people are afraid of color, others are wild about it, and there doesn’t seem to be much in-between.

Some people are afraid of color, others are wild about it, and there doesn’t seem to be much in-between. But today I am talking about the wild ones, and that includes me! I love color, but it takes a knack to incorporate it fluidly throughout your home, especially with today’s open floor plans and sight lines. If you go overboard you’ll end up with a hodge-podge with no logical connection from one room to the next.

Here are some tips:

Of course, we always start with an inspired palette. We ask our clients to think about the colors they love to wear, or a favorite piece of artwork or photos from a special vacation.

From that we create a harmonious palette of three to five colors that we disperse throughout the house so the rooms flow together naturally and beautifully.

Some people like color on the walls and ceilings, others on furniture and others on accessories, but we typically don’t use color on all three. Placing bright colors side by side can be information overload, but too many neutrals can be boring. You need to balance the two for contrast and a visual break.

Instead of making one color the primary tone in every room we alternate colors. In one room blue might be the dominant color and we might pop yellow and green as accents. In the next room we would use yellow as the main color and blue and green as accents, and so on. Accent colors introduce layers of texture, pattern and movement and guide us smoothly from one space to another.
